Andy Murray, who is still searching for his maiden major, got off to a blistering start at the Aussie Open.
The Brit baller stomped all over South African Kevin Anderson 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round hitting 37 winners against 19 errors, 9 aces, and converting 8 of 12 break points all while throwing down a paltry 35% first serve percentage. He'll need to better than that stat when he faces either Frenchie Marc Gicquel or Simone "The Beautiful" Bolelli in the next round.
Muzz also debuted the new adidas Andy Murray Competition duds designed specifically with the fifth seed in mind. He's wearing the Traditional Polo in blue + acid buzz ($54) which features a 3-button placket collar with contrasting side panels and a mesh panel on back for ventilation.
The polo is paired with the Bermuda Shorts in white ($46) which have a mesh-lined inset and contrast markings on back.
And of course Muzz will be wearing the uber-popular Barricade V's ($110) in blue + white.
Firstly, let me say I really miss him in Fred Perry. Their designs were so beautifully classic and helped Muzz stand out from the crowd of techno fibers and glaring color choices. I particularly loved when they took vintage looks and styles and gave them a modern twist for his matches.
That being said I like the use of acid buzz to help these pieces pop against the blue courts, even though I don't find the actual design compelling (or the roomy fit for that matter.)
But kudos to adidas for giving the 22-year old his own special gear to wear. Let's hope he makes it worth their while.

FASHION FIX: Rog rocks Rochus in Basel, goes mahogany + white for Nike

Roger Federer kept it close to home in his return to tennis action and made a winning start as he begins his end-of-season campaign.
The 3-time defending champ at Basel defeated qualifier Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4 in the first round wrapping up his 30th win at his hometown tourney. Next up: Andreas Seppi.
The 15-time Grand Slammer also debuted some new duds for the indoor season including the Nike Men's Winter Masters Polo ($65) in mahogany + white and featuring contrast trim on the collar and body-mapped venting on the spine. This polo has a true vintage feel and seems to be channeling brands like Original Penguin.
The polo is paired with the Nike Men's Winter Classic Athlete Woven Short ($50) in white.
This look is def a slight departure from Fed's usual modern stylings. But it's a refreshing change and the mahogany colorway is good fit for this time of year.

FASHION FIX: Rafa returns and wins, goes green spark + navy for Nike

Rafael Nadal played his first match since his semifinal defeat to Juan Martin del Potro at the US Open and his recovery from an abdominal injury.
The 6-time Grand Slammer was pushed by Marcos Baghdatis in Beijing but eventually prevailed taking out the Cypriot 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round. He'll face James Blake next and will try to close the gap in the H2H which currently sits at 2-3 in favor of the American baller.
Rafa also debuted some new colorways of the Nike duds he's been wearing recently but they've also been renamed for the season. He's working the Nike Winter Bold Master Polo ($60) in green spark with black + white paired with Nike Woven Winter Woven Long Short ($55) in dark obsidian navy with white + green spark.
I'm liking the bright green spark choice but it's certainly not a color everyone could get away with wearing (unless your a bronzed, primal tennis gawd.) Those of you with yellow undertones in your skin should run far, FAR away unless you'd like to look like, uh, death.
The shorts aren't really doing anything for me, though the boldness of the style is fitting for Rafa. The design doesn't really match up - it looks messy and patched together. I much prefer the older style especially from his championship run in Oz which featured a subtle, clean window pane effect.
So much bettah.

FASHION FIX: Nole mutes Misha, goes red + khaki for adidas

Ever the entertainer, Novak Djokovic not only dropped trou this week but he also made a wardrobe change mid-tourney in Montreal from his Wimby duds to what we have here. Gawd, can he BE anymore talented?
The Serb defeated Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-4 and will attempt to break a 2-match losing streak to Andy Roddick when they meet in ANOTHER highly-anticipated quarterfinal.
Nole also debuted some new adidas duds for his match including the Men's Edge Top Djokovic ($47) in red + orange featuring a mesh back and Nole's falcon logo on the right shoulder.
The shirt is paired with the Edge Bermuda Shorts ($39) in brown + white though the brown is definitely mixed with grey as well. More of a khaki I say.
Although it's basically the same style he's been wearing, it's good to see adidas give him some fresh color combos especially since the Nike boys 1 + 2 have been working some new gear themselves. This outfit is my fave of the year for him so far because the red is a beautifully deep shade and the pairing with the khaki compliments nicely. Plus, no one else on the tour is wearing anything similar at the moment - what a crazy concept!
His Aussie Open look comes in second for me now.

FASHION FIX: Nike gets loud with Fall 2009 John McEnroe Collection
Nike has just released the John McEnroe Collection for Fall 2009, a sporty group featuring shorts, warm up jackets, and accessories in bright colors and loud prints - how appropriate. The collection also showcases cheeky t-shirts with the tennis loudmouth's likeness and his most famous, dare I say infamous, saying, "You Cannot Be Serious!".
I love this collection because it's functional for on-court play but also has pieces which could be worn on the street. Plus, the design and detailing is inspired and truly captures the spirit and attitude of the 7-time Grand Slammer with its mix of performance + style.

FASHION FIX: Nole says "buh-bye" to blue, hello to red with adidas Falcon collection

Novak Djokovic will be hoping do better this year than last when he was dumped out of Wimbledon's second round by Marat Safin. And, while he made the final Sunday in Halle he continued his losing streak in championship matches earning his fourth consecutive defeat this time to Tommy Haas. A mental hurdle much?
For his campaign, the Serb will be continue to showcase duds from the adidas Falcon line but, luckily for us, Nole has dropped the eye-sore blue for red - phew. The collection features the brand's trademark ClimaCool fabrication which pulls heat and sweat away from the body and allows air to circulate close to the skin.
He'll be working the Men's Edge Top (above, $46) paired with the Men's Edge Bermuda Shorts (below, $37)

Here are the new kicks Nole will be wearing during his campaign for his first Wimby Championship: the Genius CC Novak sneakers in white/red/brown ($118).

(UPDATED) FASHION FIX: Rafa gets white + purple for Wimbledon defense - but will he show?

After a disappointing fourth round loss in Paris, Rafael Nadal will be highly focused on defending his turf at The All England Club next week.
The Mallorcan Matador will be working the Nike Double Bold Men's Tennis Polo Shirt ($48) in white which features a 2-button placket and a shadow dot print design. This top will be paired with the white Dri-FIT Woven Men's Tennis Short ($38) with its window pane design and slightly longer length.
The Air Max Courtballistec 1.3 makes its return but this time it's made specifically for the grass with nubbies on the sole and featured in white + purple (a royal color for the current king of grass - how fitting.)
Rafa will also sport the Wimby colors of purple + green on the headband and wristbands during his defense.

The polo and shorts were taken from the Nike UK site so I'm hoping the actual pieces he wears will have the purple Nike swooshes and NOT the black.
But the big question is: will Rafa be fit enough to defend his Wimby crown after his recent knee issues? Well, according to The All England Club's Twitter, he's already there:
UPDATE: Proof is in the puddin' peeps. Check it.

FASHION FIX: Fed goes white + gold for record-breaking Wimbledon campaign

Newly-crowned Roland Garros champ Roger Federer will attempt to become the all-time major title leader as he goes for a sixth Wimbledon title and 15th Grand Slam next week.
During his campaign, the Swiss stylist will be working pieces from Nike's White/Gold Collection including the Dri-FIT Court Men's Tennis Polo Shirt ($48) paired with the Dri-FIT Athlete Men's Tennis Short ($34).
Here's a sneak peek of the wristbands for the 27-year old which features the Nike swoosh and his ubiquitous "RF" logo.
Fed will be working the Zoom Vapor VI Tour Men's Tennis Shoe ($109) in white + gold and will most likely feature some reference to his five Championships on the kicks.

But after last year's Gatsby-esque cardigan and the blazer/pant combo from year's past, what will Fed surprise his fans with this year? Stay tuned!

(UPDATED) FASHION FIX: Rafa crushes Teimuraz, goes back to polo-wearing ways (WTF?)

Rafael Nadal made a solid start to his campaign towards his first Sony Ericsson Open title and another shot at the Indian Wells-Miami double last night.
The world's top baller swept aside Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and only dropped five points on his first serve. Gawdy much? Up next: Portuguese qualifier Federico Gil.
So it seems Rafa has returned to his much-maligned polo shirt wearing ways in Miami and I'm sure the Rafanatics will have a few things to say about it (like, duh.) Take thee to the comments section!
In the meantime, let's get back to his on-court fashion: the 6-time Grand Slammer is working the Nike Dri-FIT Sunny Men's Tennis Polo Shirt in white/yellow/mint green and the Dri-FIT Bold Open Men's Tennis Shorts in white tied together with mint green head and wrist bands.
I deflove this color combo but I'm not sure moving Rafa towards a buttoned-up polo look is the way to go without adding more punch and Raflair with bolder graphics or designs. The color-block short-sleeve shirts he's been wearing lately were a good compromise but this style is moving him towards *cough* Swiss territory. Egads!
BONUS: In addition to the Bold Open Men's Tennis Shorts in white he's wearing now, check out the rest of the duds the World No.1 will be sporting as he goes for a fifth consecutive Roland Garros crown including the Nadal French Open Men's Tennis Polo Shirt in white + grey, Nike Reversible Men's Tennis Hoody, and the Bold Open Men's Tennis Shorts in black!

UPDATE: Lots o' questions in the comments on this pink colorway of the polo Rafa was supposed to be wearing at Roland Garros. There's always a chance for a last minute switch-a-roo (wouldn't be the first time, huh?).
Let's keep everything crossed it makes it into his kit and I'll post if it gets confirmed. Thanks to an anonymous reader for the images!

(UPDATED) FASHION FIX: Fed defeats Kevin, debuts "new" Nike stylings

Roger Federer made quick work of his opening match in Miami.
The Swiss stylist defeated qualifier Kevin Kim 6-3, 6-2 in the tourney's second round saving all five break points against his serve. Up next: veteran baller Nicolas Kiefer.
The Nike duds Fed's wearing remind me a lot of last year's spring offerings in terms of design: In '08 he wore the Sphere Cool React Polo and this year Fed's working another solid color polo shirt in white with contrast dark tan collar but this year's version also includes a contrast placket but no contrast banding on the sleeves. There's also a pop of turquoise on the inner placket, the head band, and wrist bands. Smart color combo for sure.
Last year's Dri-Fit Control Shorts have been replaced by the ubiquitous Spring Woven Short in dark tan with a white side stripe.
I'm not thrilled Nike has somewhat regurgitated the same style from last year but I guess there's only so much you can do with FedFashion (read: clean + classic). Also, I haven't found a retail outlet online who's selling these pieces. If you have any information, let me know! (UPDATE: click here to buy the polo and here for the shorts.)
BONUS: Here's the Swiss' shirt of choice for this year's Roland Garros - the Nike Federer French Open Classic Polo (most likely paired with the Spring Woven Short in the dark navy obsidian colorway with turquoise side stripe.)
UPDATE: Here are the shorts Fed will be wearing with the French Open Classic Polo above!
