PHOTO OP: ...and it still may not have been enough

It was always going to take more than some new fangled racquet-copter for Andy Murray to defeat Fernando Gonzalez on the red clay of Paris.

The third seed was defeated by his Chilean foe, even eating a bagel during his 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 loss. Although on paper it's an upset we knew Gonzo was the better clay-court baller going into this match in all ways - movement, strategy, and experience. He'll face Robin Soderling, who demolished Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, for a spot in the big final.

Well, I finally got ONE of the boys' semifinalists right. Is it too much to ask to make it 2 outta 4 Fed?

  2. So many people are happy that Andy's out which makes me sad. His goal was to make it to second week and he did that, and it's more than most expected. I'm proud of him.

I just hope Gonzo wins this next match. Really, it's my last shred of hope for this crap of a year's RG.

  3. Sabine: I'm cheering for Monfils too. He's def my favourite player left in the men's draw.

Soderling...ugh. I've never particularly been a fan of Gonzalez, but I really hope he gets rid of Sod.

  4. Soderling is the only one who can defeat Fed if Monfils can't do it.

  5. I obviously in a minority but I want Fed to win tomorrow. He'll probably get thrashed the way he's playing but I'm hoping he'll suddenly get a second wind or something. There is something that I don't quite like about Monfils. Not quite sure what it is.

  6. Anon, you're not alone. I adore Monfils but I've been a fan of Roger since I started watching tennis so I want him to win the French Open.

Watch out for me today against Monfils. I will show up often!

Tough match ahead. Hold me tight, Anon. We will together help the Fed make it.

  8. What a weird and surreal RG. I'll call it Anarchy RG from now on... LOL

I really hope someone can stop Rob the Sod! Ugh!

  9. Poor Andy's out. You know what stopped him from beating Gonzo? He hasn't won a slam. Federer overcame Haas because he knows it's there for the taking. I don't think anyone can stop him now. In fact, the same thing happened to our beloved Frenchy today. Once Federer took that first set, La Monf didn't have the belief he could do it. One day Andy will be able to overcome these things, but he'll have to win a major first.

Richie, I know you're devastated, but I am so glad Serena's out. Vamos Dinara!

  10. natch: agreed - being there and doing it already helps tremendously down the stretch here. believing is a huge part in winning a major.

i'm actually really happy for sveta, that she slayed a few demons today (and ReRe of course). i hope her headcase days are over and she get on to winning again. she has one of the most interesting games to watch when she's using her entire arsenal. not that the head is on straight (hopefully) her game will bloom again.

i'd also love to see dinara win it a really own the keys to the wta penthouse. the tour needs a strong, solid world no.1.

  11. I'm bumbed that Serena is out too. With respect to mental toughness I still think she's the strongest. I really thought she'd come back and beat Sveta, but that's OK, ReRe is still the best.

I'm sick of people hating on Roger, he's taking this bitch! Soderling is a venomous individual but you can't knock the hustle, the boy took out Rafael Nadal.

  12. It's a shame Sveta and Dinara can't meet in the final. I would favor Dinara slightly, but it would be so nice to see Sveta win another slam. Like you said, Richie, she has such a great game from the neck down.

Uh-oh, we're agreeing again. Time for the DNA test. ;)

  14. Soderling should win and deserves to win. He did all the heavy lifting.
